YS Tang, Malaysia classical guitarist
Profile picture courtesy of VerSeS Music Ensemble

A seasoned concert performer and classical guitarist from Malaysia. YS Tang holds a Master's degree in Music performance. Beside his teaching commitments, YS Tang maintains a busy performance schedule, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, with a particular emphasis on early music. He conducts public seminars covering various aspects of classical guitar. Additionally, he collaborates closely with VerSeS - KL Madrigal Singers and actively engages in outreach programs, with the aim of promoting classical music to the wider public, particularly among younger audiences.

With more than 25 years of experience in music education, Mr. Tang specializes exclusively in classical music instruction. He holds the belief that each student possesses unique qualities, necessitating a varied approach to teaching. However, he remains steadfast in his commitment to maintaining the fundamental principles of building a solid technical foundation for students.

Within Mr. Tang's studio, students are not only encouraged but also actively supported in participating in performances and competitions. This serves a dual purpose: it offers valuable experience in exam preparation while also fostering the development of students' self-confidence and sense of responsibility.

CafeMusic:
Apart from grand opera houses and big concert halls, classical music often found its home in more intimate settings. As far back as the 19th century, composers like Franz Schubert, among other renowned Viennese composers, hosted small concerts that we now refer to as "Schubertiads." This tradition of intimate musical gatherings persisted into the era of Chopin, who crafted many piano solos specifically for performance in relaxed settings, giving rise to the term "salon music."

In the realm of guitar music, Francisco Tárrega carried on this tradition, with many of his compositions reflecting the salon-style approach. While South American guitar solos may not have originally fit within this genre, they are well-suited to today's salon-style performances. Nonetheless, I prefer to characterize them as evocative yet refined café guitar music, combining relaxation with refined taste.
